Jerico Tracy is a woman with a mind like a library. Its shelves are adorned with a seemingly endless offering of books on artists and their origins, where pages are marked with reference to the world around her in keen observation of fashion, architecture and design. In conversation, Jerico’s tacit knowledge never fails to shine through. She is both engaging and outspoken, offering up her perspective with a genuine and energetic clarity that feels rare to come by in an industry that tends to rely on performative façades. In contrast to this sphere she revolves in, Jerico is always willing to share. This is reflected in her career as director and curator of her eponymous Sydney-based gallery, Jerico Contemporary, where she pairs emerging artists with emerging collectors. Recently, she has also assumed the role as mother to her baby daughter, Anouk. Here, we spend a few minutes in conversation with Jerico about this special new venture.
My name is…
Jerico Tracy
But my friends and family call me…
Jer
I live with...
My husband, my daughter Anouk and my two rabbits Nyiama and Zeus.
My bedroom window…
overlooks a beautiful tree-lined street. I live in the heart of Paddington, which is my favourite part of Sydney. It has that cosy neighbourhood feeling even though you’re in the centre of the city.
I first discovered art…
when I was quite young. I remember visiting the Musée d'Orsay and wondering whose responsibility it was to pick what artworks and sculptures went where, and that I wanted that job.
But before that, I thought I’d pursue…
fashion. Though for me, fashion and art are forever intertwined.
I realised I’m exactly where I should be when...
I first held my daughter in my arms.
And I’m where I am today because...
of my mother.
My ideal morning…
an early swim in the ocean followed by a strong black coffee.
The perfect evening…
a glass of wine with my husband discussing the events that unfolded that day.
I’m inspired by…
art, nature, architecture.
I’m moved by…
people who stand up for what they believe in.
My first baby is due to arrive…
she has arrived. Two weeks early.
My favourite childhood memory...
playing in the backyard with my brothers.
A tradition I hope to introduce/continue with my child…
travel. We went on so many adventures growing up and I hope to be able to do the same with Anouk.
